The driving force behind this rally appears to be the increasing demand for spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Analysts suggest that bitcoin's surge is partly due to the popularity of these ETFs, which provide investors with a less risky way to delve into the crypto market. Such funds have attracted a substantial influx of cash this year, according to experts.


"Investors are becoming aware that bitcoin can serve as an uncorrelated asset, making it highly appealing for portfolio diversification," explained Joel Kruger, a market strategist at the digital currency exchange LMAX Group, speaking to CBS MoneyWatch.


Spot bitcoin ETFs enable investors to gain direct exposure to bitcoin without having to physically possess it. Unlike regular bitcoin ETFs, where bitcoin futures contracts underlie the assets, spot bitcoin ETFs have bitcoins as their underlying assets. Managed by a firm, each spot bitcoin ETF issues shares based on its own bitcoin holdings, acquired from other holders or authorized cryptocurrency exchanges, with these shares being listed on traditional stock exchanges.



In January, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the sale of spot bitcoin ETFs, leading to a total deposit of around $7.35 billion into the 11 different funds available, as reported by Bloomberg on Monday. Notably, some of the world's major institutional investors, including BlackRock and Fidelity Investments, now offer spot bitcoin ETFs.


Bitcoin's price surge was initiated several months ago in 2023, reaching a 19-month high of about $41,000 in December. Analysts at that time attributed the surge to three main factors: anticipation of the SEC's approval of spot ETFs, expectations of Fed rate cuts, and the upcoming halving event, where the reward for mining bitcoin is halved.


However, it's essential to note that the ongoing price surge doesn't diminish the cryptocurrency's inherent volatility. As Laila Maidan, an investing correspondent at Insider, pointed out in December when bitcoin broke $41,000, its highest value in 19 months, "it doesn't mean the crypto is going to skyrocket and stay high. The primary cryptocurrency, with the largest market value, has also experienced a boost due to the approval of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States that include Bitcoin. On Monday, the trading volumes of these funds surged, and companies linked to cryptocurrencies saw a rally, in contrast to the cautious atmosphere in broader financial markets.


In the Asian morning, Bitcoin reached as high as $57,036, its peak since late 2021, while ether reached $3,275, its highest level since April 2022.

United States Makes Historic Lunar Landing After 50-Year Gap

 

A spacecraft, created and operated by the Texas-based company Intuitive Machines, successfully landed near the moon's south pole on Thursday. This achievement marked the first U.S. landing on the lunar surface in over fifty years and the first ever accomplished by a private company.


NASA, which had deployed various research instruments on the spacecraft named Odysseus, celebrated the landing as a significant milestone in their objective to send a fleet of commercially operated spacecraft on scientific exploration missions to the moon. This effort is part of the broader plan to return astronauts to the moon later this decade.


However, the landing was not without challenges. Initial communication issues raised concerns about the potential impairment or obstruction of the vehicle. The uncrewed six-legged robot lander touched down at approximately 6:23 p.m. EST, and a joint webcast by Intuitive Machines and NASA provided updates from the mission operations center in Houston.


The landing involved a tense final approach and descent, during which a problem with the spacecraft's autonomous navigation system surfaced. Engineers on the ground had to implement an untested workaround at the last minute. After an anticipated radio blackout, it took some time to re-establish communication with the spacecraft, located some 239,000 miles from Earth.



Upon reconnection, the signal was faint, confirming the successful touchdown. However, uncertainty persisted regarding the precise condition and orientation of the vehicle. The weak signal suggested the possibility that the spacecraft had landed near a crater wall or some other obstruction that affected its antenna.


Despite the challenges, Intuitive Machines mission director Tim Crain conveyed optimism, stating, "Our equipment is on the surface of the moon, and we are transmitting." Subsequent updates on social media indicated that Odysseus was upright and starting to send data.


The landing, at a crater named Malapert A near the moon's south pole, marked the first controlled descent to the lunar surface by a U.S. spacecraft since Apollo 17 in 1972. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson hailed the achievement as a "triumph," emphasizing the success of the mission.



Odysseus, carrying scientific instruments and technology demonstrations, is set to operate for seven days on solar energy. Its mission includes studying space weather interactions with the moon's surface, radio astronomy, and other aspects of the lunar environment.


This successful landing is a significant step under NASA's Artemis lunar program, aiming to return astronauts to the moon before China lands its crewed spacecraft there. YouTube personality 'Ruby Franke' issues apology during sentencing for child abuse case!

Ruby Franke, a mother of six from Utah who once shared parenting advice with a wide audience through a popular YouTube channel, tearfully apologized to her children in court. The judge handed down a sentence that could potentially result in her spending years, if not decades, in prison. Franke attributed her actions to being "manipulated" by her fellow YouTuber and business partner.


During the sentencing, Franke refrained from seeking a shorter sentence and instead expressed gratitude to local law enforcement, doctors, and social workers whom she referred to as the "angels" who rescued her children from her influence. Franke's business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, a mental health counselor initially hired to work with Franke's youngest son, also received four consecutive prison sentences ranging from one to 15 years.


Despite the severity of their actions, both women will serve a maximum of 30 years in prison due to a Utah state law capping consecutive penalties. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole will assess their behavior while incarcerated to determine the actual time each will spend behind bars.


In a remorseful statement to her absent children, Franke acknowledged the harm she caused, stating, "My willingness to sacrifice all for you was masterfully manipulated into something very ugly. I took from you all that was soft and safe and good."


The charges against Franke and Hildebrandt include four counts of aggravated child abuse, involving attempts to convince Franke's two youngest children that they were evil and needed punishment to repent. Their arrest occurred after Franke's 12-year-old son escaped and sought help from a neighbor.


Describing the environment the children were kept in, the state prosecuting attorney characterized it as "a concentration camp-like setting," drawing parallels to the horrific conditions in Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust.


Franke has shown remorse and cooperated with authorities, while Hildebrandt, according to the prosecuting attorney, continues to place blame on the children. Hildebrandt's attorney, Douglas Terry, emphasized her acceptance of responsibility for her actions.


Both women have pleaded guilty to their charges, with Franke admitting to abusive acts like kicking her son while wearing boots and subjecting him to physical labor in extreme conditions. The abuse extended to Franke's youngest daughter as well, who was coerced into harmful actions by Hildebrandt. The Franke parents' YouTube channel, "8 Passengers," has since ended, and Ruby's husband has filed for divorce.

Furthermore, Peck's narrative was set to be spotlighted in an upcoming docuseries titled Quiet on Set, which explores allegations of abuse on various Nickelodeon sets.
